Doctor Chiew Law Yer

I was chatting with my wife about people's names. I remember from secondary school a friend named "See Hin" which could be translated as "brother/comrade".
What would be a good name to have. I thought of "Doctor Chiew Law Yer" - "Doctor" being the english name, and "Law Yer" being the given name. Imagine the scenario:

Mother: "Daughter, who is this friend you brought home?"
Daughter: "Mother, please me meet my friend - Law Yer"
Mother: "A lawyer?" *kaching*
Law Yer: "Hello, auntie. I am Doctor Chiew"
Mother: "Ah! A doctor also!" *kaching*kaching*

Our health benefits are better *cough*cough*

After interviewing a candidate, I openned up the time for him to ask some questions. And like most people, he wanted to compare the company perks. The conversation went something like this:

Candidate: "What's the health benefits like?"
HengWah: "It covers x amount for y and z, etc."
Candidate: "Our health benefits are better then. They give us this, this and that"
HengWah: "That's sounds good"
Candidate: "Yeah, in fact they sent us all for the H1N1 vaccination recently" (cough, cough)

I looked at him and saw a guy with heavy sore red eyes. He was sniffing to hold back his running nose.

Obviously the vaccination didn't work. His health benefits may be better in terms of renumeration, but his work environment is not conducive for healtier lifestyle.

PKZip

The first compression software I came to know was the "pkzip". In those days everything was done using command line. But it was still fantastic. pkzip for example could shrink a text file to ~40% of it's original size (back then). And in those days hard disk, well, not many of us had hard disk, we used diskettes. These days there are so many more compression utilities, than can compress more densely and at a higher speeds.

PKzip had a counterpart PKUnzip for unzip. I used to pronounce PKUnzip as "pe-kun-zip". Unlike gzip, pkunzip was a separate program from pkzip. In later years, pkunzip was bundled inside pkzip, and so you just needed one program.

I mention about PKZip because it's creator Phil Katz (hence the PK) died of alcoholism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Katz#Death

Of drinks, drinkers and drunks

Last Sunday I attended a friends wedding dinner. Two friends decided to car pool with my wife and I. One of my friends got way to high on wine Party and started drink challenges with everyone, basically challege who can hold their drink. My friend was drunk by the end of dinner. He threw up 4-5 times during the journey back Sick. Fortunately I was prepared with many plastic bags. Actually both friends were drunk Sick. The other was still up-right (barely) and too proud to admit.

That was not the only occasion where drinkers could not hold their drinks and get drunk at weddings. Pervious wedding I attended, the groom was drunk Sick and I had to carry him up back to his apartment. At another event, the bestman was giving his speech while apparent to everyone that he was drunk Sick. And the list goes on...

I do not know why alcohol has to be brought out during weddings. Yes, it is a celebration Party, but why shame yourselves at a joyous occasion Left hugRed heartRight hug ? If you want to drink, do it on a different occasion. If you cannot hold your drink (and most of you can't), don't drink. If you never drunk before, don't start.

I think the only reason why my friends car pool with me is because they know I will send them back home safely.

No more attending wedding dinners for me.

Windows 7 Rocks!

Windows 7 Rocks! Yes, everything that was wrong and bad about Vista, they have fixed it in Windows 7. It's fast and it's smooth.

People who use Vista either had no options or were conned (or were attempting to con). And so you were right to hold back and stick to Windows XP.
If you are thinking of upgrading, yes, Windows 7 would be a good choice.
If you are on Vista, please do yourself a favour a upgrade. Don't torture yourself.

Windows 7 come in 3 different editions: Home, Professional and Ultimate. You can compare the features from different editions here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx

The enhanced desktop experience is definitely worth upgrading to Windows 7. While Vista looked nice, but you would not feel a need to move to Vista. But with Windows 7, your first 1 minute is enough to convince you. The Aero from Vista is still in Windows 7, but you will not find it causing any lag. The toolbar now provides a quick preview of your minimised applications. There are quite a lot of desktop gadgets (calendar, clock, sticky notes, news) and you can expect more will come in the near future.

I didn't like the search/find program feature. Firstly it takes priority over the usual Start | Programs. But I guess, I am getting out moded here. New users may find this feature very convenient.

Windows 7 comes with Internet Explorer 8.

The two most interesting feature (though not obvious until you need it) is the Windows XP Mode and the BitLocker.
  1. The Windows XP Mode allows you to run your program that worked well in Windows XP in Windows 7. In Vista, application compatibility was a headache and a major cause for most people to migrate back to XP. But in Windows 7, you can easily run a progarm that worked well in XP.
  2. BitLocker is a data encryption feature, which you can apply to a drive. Once enabled any files saved on that drive will be automatically encrypted. This is particularly useful for protecting USB Thumbdrives and External drives which can get misplaced or stolen. I do not know how much resource will be taken up using BitLocker, but this is feature that people are likely to welcome.
If you haven't tried Windows 7 yet, head on over to the nearest PC store.

A Fine Print - manage your print jobs

Do you ever miss the Print Preview function that some applications do not provide?
Do you ever think the Print Page Range is dumb because you need to remember the exact pages you need?
Do you ever feel a need to graphically select the pages you want to print?
Do you ever feel that the printing feature Microsoft provides does not give sufficient control for you?

Well, there's FinePrint for you!

This handy little application behaves like an intermediate print driver. After installed you will find a listing of it under the Control Panel > Printer and Faxes.

From on the user end it acts like a print staging application. If set as the default printer, all print jobs will be staged here. You can continuously add more print jobs to the queue. The print jobs can be re-ordered if you have a specific preference.

FinePrint provides a graphical interface to preview the combined final print out. This is FinePrint's selling feature, as the user can preview what will be printed. Suppose you have empty pages or tailing pages that are of no importance to you (e.g. trailing ends of a webpage), you can delete this pages.

While most printer software these days provide 2-up and higher X-up layouts, you can still have this feature even if the printer software doesn't.

Only issue I keep experiencing is the occasional "hanging" when the FinePrint windows goes into a "Not Responding" mode. I faced this many years back. Not sure what is the real cause but if you can put up with it, FinePrint is really handy when you want more control over your print jobs.

Lazy Lemon

I saw this in Cold Storage supermarket the other day. It's called "Lazy Lemon", for those who want instant lemon juice for cooking without the hassle of cutting, squeezing and cleaning up.
It is really convenient considering the fact that when you want a squeeze of lemon juice, you don't usually need the whole of lemon - unless you want the lemon smell or the sourness (is there such a word). Less waste with the Lazy Lemon.
